About the Artists
Michael Waddell has performed on clarinet in a host of great venues, including the Hollywood Bowl and Kennedy Center – whether it’s Mozart, Monk, Brahms or Bird. A twice recipient of the North Carolina Jazz Composer’s Fellowship, he produced the CDs Not From Concentrate, Defining Moments, and most recently Home Game (with UNCW faculty member Bob Russell). In addition to university teaching, Waddell performed with the world-famous Dukes of Dixieland, based out of New Orleans. He has also performed and/or recorded with Ed Paolantonio, Scott Sawyer, the American Dance Festival, the Fairbanks and Wilmington Symphony Orchestras, the UNCW Faculty Woodwind Quintet and the UNCW Symphony. In film, he performed solo clarinet on Henry Jaglom’s Deja Vu. Waddell is a graduate of the University of Michigan (clarinet performance) and East Carolina University (music education). He has studied clarinet with David Schifrin, Robert Listokin, Fred Ormand, Herbert Carter, Buddy DeFranco (jazz), and saxophone with Donald Sinta. He teaches at UNCW.

Constance Paolantonio, daughter of Michael Waddell, received her Master of Music in vocal performance and literature from Eastman School of Music and Bachelor of Music in voice performance from Appalachian State University. She has embraced a wide range of solo repertoire, including opera, oratorio, chamber music, jazz, musical theater, and other contemporary styles. As a soloist, she has most recently performed with the Wilmington Symphony, Opera New Jersey, Mercury Opera, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Champlain Valley Oratorio Society and Eastman Opera Theater. Paolantonio’s teachers and coaches have included Victoria Livengood, Katherine Ciesinski, Benton Hess, Julia Pedigo, and Nancy King. She teaches voice at UNCW and is a freelance artist in Durham, North Carolina.

Elizabeth Loparits began her professional career in her native Hungary, where she won top prizes at the 1995 National Bartok Piano Competition and the 1996 Kodaly-Bartok Chamber Music Competition. As a soloist and collaborative artist, she has appeared on recitals in Hungary, Austria, Costa Rica, and throughout the United States. After winning a concerto competition in 2001, she performed with the North Carolina Symphony. Recently, she appeared as guest artist at the University of North Carolina Greensboro’s Focus on Piano Literature, and served for two summers as principal Young Artist coach/accompanist at the prestigious Opera North Company. Loparits is an active teacher, clinician, and adjudicator in NC and nationally. She holds an education degree and a chamber music artist diploma from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Pecs, Hungary; a Master of Music from Illinois State University; and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She serves as faculty and staff accompanist at UNCW.
