About the program
The program begins with Slant Song based on a 1910 children’s book written by American writer Peter Newell. Here, the musicians tell the story of the adventures of Bobby, whose go-kart escapes down a steep hill. Frop utilizes a fingering technique that creates a continuous flow of surprising sounds and textures. Gnal transposes the geometric proportions of a landscape into music. Opening Lines, written for Antoine Françoise, is based on the first phrases found in Dashiell Hammett’s stories. Lulu in a Box, written for Laurent Estoppey, is based on the prologue of Frank Wedekind’s 1904 play Lulu. The text, as well as a second piano part are played through a small loudspeaker–in a box.
