About the Choirs and Conductor
UNCW Concert Choir and Chamber Choir are the two academic
choral groups at UNCW, with members selected from across campus. Although
singers are drawn from many different academic disciplines, they share a common
love of choral singing and are quite capable as singers, sight-readers and
choral musicians. The groups often combine for the performance of larger works,
sometimes in collaboration with other ensembles in the region. The Chamber
Choir has appeared on tour in Europe 13 times, with featured presentations at
St. Anne’s Music Society (London), Thomaskirche (Leipzig, Germany), City Museum
(Munich) and Karlskirche (Vienna).
Joe Hickman came to UNCW in 1979 and has served as director
of choral activities since that time. He has also served as assistant conductor
and later music director of the UNCW Community Orchestra (later re-named
Wilmington Symphony). In addition to an active schedule of teaching, Hickman
has served as an administrator within the Department of Music and later as
faculty assistant to the provost, representing the Division of Academic Affairs
in matters concerning construction of classroom buildings, including the
Cultural Arts Building.
Recent
publication projects include orchestral reductions of the Haydn Creation which
is in production with Carus Verlag of Stuttgart, Germany; and Verdi’s Rigoletto
with Doblinger Music Publisher of Vienna, Austria. Earlier, he published
several collections of choral works with Masterworks Press of Olympia,
Washington, and was the editor for Paul Winter’s Earth Mass, published by Hal
Leonard Music.
Hickman is in his
third season as conductor of Opera Wilmington, having led performances of
Verdi’s Rigoletto in 2015 and Mozart’s Così fan tutte in 2016.
