UNCW's 36th Annual JazzFest: the Rahsaan Barber Sextet
Since earning a master’s in jazz performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 2005, jazz saxophonist Rahsaan Barber has set out on a path of excellence in performance, composition, education and entrepreneurship. Barber performs in Kelly Clarkson’s band and has appeared with the Temptations, Idina Menzel, Delfeayeo Marsalis, Gladys Knight, Little Big Town, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Duffy Jackson, Winard Harper, Kirk Franklin and the Wooten Brothers. Barber has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Ryman, the Village Vanguard, Birdland, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and the Montreux Jazz Festival. He leads his own jazz ensemble, Everyday Magic; serves as musical director of the Nashville Salsa Machine; is co-leader of Latin Jazz Septet El Movimiento; and is songwriter and arranger for hip-hop soul band, the Megaphones. In 2011, Barber launched his record label, Jazz Music City, with the release of Everyday Magic, an album featuring original compositions recorded by his Nashville-based quintet. The album was selected as an Editor’s Pick by DownBeat Magazine. Barber is an in-demand producer for Nashville’s rising jazz artists including singer/songwriter Stephanie Adlington and trumpeter Imer Santiago. In 2017, he released The Music in the Night, an album of standards arranged by the saxophonist.
Barber is also an accomplished music educator. In 2005, at the age of 25, he was hired by Belmont University to teach the saxophone studio. Promoted to full-time instructor, Barber taught a wide array of courses including private lessons, improvisation, classical and commercial ensembles and performance seminars. While focusing his energies toward musical performance and composition, as well as the management of his record label, Jazz Music City, Barber remains a sought-after private instructor and clinician at the collegiate and professional level, having presented master classes for students at numerous educational institutions including Lipscomb University, Tennessee State University, the University of Louisville, the University of Memphis, the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) and the University of North Carolina. Barber is active in the greater jazz community of Music City, serving as the vice-president of the Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society and on the advisory board of the Nashville Jazz Workshop, as well as volunteering for Fisk University’s radio station, WFSK (88.1FM) as host of Generations In Jazz. Barber is a Yamaha Performing Artist and proudly endorses Yamaha saxophones.

Tickets
$6 general public, free to students with valid UNCW ID.
Tickets are available in advance through the UNCW Box Office (located in Kenan Auditorium) and one hour prior to performance at the Kenan Auditorium Box Office.
Advance tickets may be purchased online or by calling the box office at 910-962-3500 (M-F) Any remaining tickets will be available one hour prior to performance at the Kenan Auditorium Box Office.
UNCW students may obtain tickets in advance by going to the UNCW Box Office (located in Kenan Auditorium) Monday-Friday 12 - 6 p.m.

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC CONCERT GUIDELINES FOR UNCW STUDENTS
Arrive on time
• Arrive at the concert venue at least 10 minutes before the posted concert time. If you need to get a ticket at the box office, have your UNCW student ID ready and arrive at least another 5 sooner.
• The box office will only be open for ticket sales and distribution to students up until 15 minutes after the performance begins.
• Students arriving 5 minutes after the start time of the event will not be admitted free with their UNCW ID card, and must purchase tickets in order to be admitted. If the box office has closed, students will not be admitted into the venue.
Concert attendance and program stamping
Programs for students registered in Department of Music classes are stamped by the ushers at the end of the performance.
• If you leave before the concert ends, your program will not be stamped.
• If ushers should run out of programs, ask them to stamp your ticket stub at the end of the concert. Let your teacher know what happened.
Use of electronic devices during performances
• use of computers, tablets, phones is not allowed during performances. Anyone using an electronic device will be asked to put it away. Noncompliance may result in being asked to leave the event.
