The Department of Music continues its commitment to contemporary composers and performance with the Experimental Music Workshop – a collective of 22 musicians from the University of South Carolina Honors College, School of Music, the Columbia music and arts community, and beyond.

The Workshop, founded in 2009 by percussionist Greg Stuart, includes 16 percussionists, with six ensemble members on horn, flute, saxophone, clarinet and electric guitar, and presents experimental music concerts throughout the Southeast. Performances have been praised as “patient, unpredictable, [and] exceedingly beautiful” (New York Times).

The group has collaborated with composers Michael Pisaro, Nomi Epstein, and Jürg Frey, and with performers Erik Carlson, Tatsuya Nakatani, Tim Feeney, and Sarah Hennies. The Experimental Music Workshop is set to release their debut recording on Edition Wandelweiser Records in the fall of 2016, performing the music of Jürg Frey.
