Program
In celebration of Women’s History Month, soprano Maria Beery, in collaboration with Elizabeth Loparits, presents an evening of vocal music by women composers. With pieces from the 17th to the 21st century, Beery showcases a variety of genres and some rarely heard works, culminating in Libby Larsen’s powerful song cycle, “Try Me, Good King”: The Last Words of the Wives of Henry VIII.  Helena Spencer and Amanda Hoke contribute bassoon and flute accompaniment.

About the Artist
Maria Beery first attended Davidson College to study mathematics, and then studied voice at Temple University and the University of South Carolina where she performed as Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) and Adina (L’elisir d’amore). Other performances include as the Soprano in Columbia Operatic Laboratory’s comedic operatic review, Four Singers Walk into a Bar, which she composed with the collaboration of her fellow performers. COLab is planning a second comedic adventure, as well as an updated script for Mozart’s classic chamber opera, The Impresario, in which Beery will sing Miss Silverpeal. She is an active soprano in the Columbia, SC community, appearing with the Carolina Wind Symphony, Sandlapper Singers, Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra, and Palmetto Opera. Recent operatic performance with Opera Wilmington was as The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors in January 2019 and Frasquita in their 2017 production of Bizet’s Carmen.
