About the Artists
Barry David Salwen is an international concert pianist, giving performances and master classes in the United States, Europe, Israel, and Asia. He gave two weeks of master classes at the Shanghai Conservatory in China, among many other places. As the recipient of a prestigious Fulbright Scholars Grant, he gave a semester’s seminar at the Music Conservatory in Freiburg, Germany, one of the leading music institutions in the country. His annual master classes at UNCW, and more recently the annual Piano Day, have been attended by students from across eastern North Carolina. Among Salwen’s nine CDs is the first recording of the complete solo piano music of the American master Roger Sessions; he is the first artist to record all of these works.

Ellie Wee 
Cellist Ellie Wee, DMA, has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra player in the United States, France, Italy, Turkey, Japan, and Korea with such groups as Stonehill Trio, New England Chamber Ensemble, Menotti Lyric Opera, Arizona Opera, Pacific Music Festival, Boston Bel Canto Opera, Handel and Haydn Society, and Boston Baroque, to name a few. In 2009, she was invited to perform and to participate in a roundtable discussion as a panel at the "Haydn in London" Symposium in Boston, which included world-renowned conductor, Sir Roger Norrington.
       Wee has received numerous awards and scholarships, including the Anna Rosenzweig String Award, the Regents' Full Scholarship Award, and the Boston University Full Scholarship Award, among others. A dedicated teacher as well, her students have been chosen to participate in state and national-level honors orchestras, including the ASTA National High School Honors Orchestra. Moreover, her students were chosen as a winner of the Director's Choice Award at the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition in 2014 and MMEA All Eastern District Senior Festival Audition in 2015. She is also an active performer, lecturer and adjudicator, and has presented master classes and concerts at some of the most prestigious performing arts institutions and universities in the United States and internationally.
       Wee has taught at Arizona State University, Northeastern University, The College of St. Mary Magdalen, and Stonehill College, Easton, MA. She appears as a regular guest artist to give recitals and master classes at Adnan Menderes University State Conservatory, Kusadaci, Turkey.
       Her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance and Master of Music (with Honors) in Cello Performance are from the New England Conservatory; Boston University (Historical Performance);  her DMA is from Arizona State University, also in Cello Performance

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC CONCERT GUIDELINES FOR UNCW STUDENTS

Arrive on time

•   Arrive at the concert venue at least 10 minutes before the posted concert time. If you need to get a ticket at the box office, have your UNCW student ID ready and arrive at least another 5 sooner.

    •   The box office will only be open for ticket sales and distribution to students up until 15 minutes after the performance begins. 

    •   Students arriving 5 minutes after the start time of the event will not be admitted free with their UNCW ID card, and must purchase tickets in order to be admitted. If the box office has closed, students will not be admitted into the venue.


Concert attendance and program stamping

Programs for students registered in Department of Music classes are stamped by the ushers at the end of the performance. 

   •   If you leave before the concert ends, your program will not be stamped.

   •   If ushers should run out of programs, ask them to stamp your ticket stub at the end of the concert. Let your teacher know what happened. 

 

Use of electronic devices during performances

   •   use of computers, tablets, phones is not allowed during performances. Anyone using an electronic device will be asked to put it away. Noncompliance may result in being asked to leave the event.
