About the conductor
John P. LaCognata received a bachelor science in music education from the University of Illinois, a master of music in trumpet performance from Auburn University and a doctorate in music education with an emphasis in wind conducting from the University of Florida.
UNCW Wind Symphony
Wind Symphony is UNCW’s premier symphonic. Its members consist of students from across the university campus, including both music majors and non-music majors. Wind Symphony performs the finest literature available for winds including traditional wind band repertoire, marches, transcriptions, and the newest 21st century works. Wind Symphony regularly features guest soloists and guest conductors. Under LaCognata’s baton, Wind Symphony has become an important addition to Wilmington’s musical landscape. Students, teachers, and anyone who enjoys music for symphonic bands will be delighted by the performances.
OLLI New Horizons Band
The OLLI New Horizons Band of Wilmington, in cooperation
with the UNCW Department of Music, provides an opportunity for adults of
all ages to make music in a concert band format. Experienced musicians
and beginners alike are invited to participate. For those just
beginning to play, or playing again for the first time in many years,
guidance is provided.
The OLLI New Horizons Band is a member of the New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA), which began in 1991 when Roy Ernst, the founder of NHIMA, saw a need to provide adults an entry point for music making, no matter their experience level. See the UNCW New Horizons Band story at
