The UNCW Opera Outreach Project is an organization designed
to provide vocal and dramatic operatic training to UNCW students, through local
and campus performances. The creative group behind UNC-WOOP! are UNCW faculty
members and the Opera Wilmington artistic team: voice professor Nancy King,
conductor Joe Hickman, vocal coach/accompanists Elizabeth Loparits and Bettsy
Curtis, costume designer Mark Sorensen, scenic designer Max Lydy, lighting
designer Tara Noland, and choreographer Nancy Carson. UNC-WOOP! is dedicated to
training the next generation of opera singers, and awakening an interest in
opera locally.
Now
in its 17th year, UNC-WOOP! is a sought-after group for local performances,
including the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the Friends of the Library
Southport/Oak Island, WHQR, and the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. Recent
productions include Mozart’s Magic Flute and Menotti’s Amahl and the Night
Visitors with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, and Otto Nicolai’s The Merry
Wives of Windsor, and 2017’s “The Gypsy Life.” WOOP! has also been active in
New Hanover County schools, presenting “Storytelling through Opera” with
performances of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Massenet’s Cinderella
