ABOUT THE CONCERT
Focusing on his art during the months of pandemic isolation, UNCW jazz professor Jerald Shynett called on his years as a performer and teacher to compose, to consider the power of jazz as an art form and how to use the jazz curricula as a force in music education for today’s students. To diversify the curricula and the institution, to widen the cultural perspective of his students, to broaden outreach to a community and culture looking for inspiration and inclusion.
The June 27 concert at Kenan Auditorium includes four world premieres of Shynett compositions, all performed by a 16-piece big band

ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Shynett is an associate professor of jazz studies and trombone at UNCW, where he teaches trombone, improvisation, jazz theory, jazz arranging, and jazz history. Along with directing Hwy 17 Big Band, he is director of Slide Effects, an eight- piece jazz trombone ensemble. He is an active performer and clinician throughout North Carolina, including the jazz trombone and combo instructor at the UNC at Chapel Hill Summer Jazz Workshop. Shynett is a performing member with the Grammy-nominated Jazz Surge (2010’s A Comet’s Tale and 2017’s Whispers on the Wind). In 2017, Shynett presented his original work Exemption at the International Society of Composers and Arrangers in Tampa, FL. He has performed with jazz legends Chick Corea, Slide Hampton, Randy Brecker, Conrad Herwig, Bob Mintzer, Vincent Herring, along with popular artists K.C. and the Sunshine Band, the O’Jays, Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli, and the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, among others. His writing extends to television and film with Paramount’s Domestic Disturbance and Warner Brother’s television series One Tree Hill. Shynett holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of South Florida (‘94) and a Master of Music from the University of Miami (‘96).
Shynett has been performing, composing and arranging jazz music professionally for the last 25 years, including playing in small jazz combos, professional big bands, and as a solo jazz trombonist and pianist. His compositions have been performed by all-trombone ensembles (including the Jazz Surge trombone section, of which he is a performing member), and jazz big bands at UNCW, Coastal Carolina University, University of North Texas, University of Southern Florida, and the John Brown Big Band featuring Nneena Freelon.
