ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Madison Murphy is a junior at UNCW pursuing her B.A. in
music performance with a minor in French. A member of UNCW’s Opera Outreach
Project, Madison has performed in operatic scenes as Gretel and Sandman in
Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Monica in Menotti’s The Medium, and will
appear this spring in the role of Shulamit in Meira Warshauer’s contemporary
opera, Elijah’s Violin. While in residence at UNCW, Madison has performed with
the UNCW Chamber Choir in Mozart’s Requiem, the Brahms Requiem, Haydn’s Mass in
Time of War, and Jeffery Van’s A Procession Winding Around Me. In 2017, she
appeared as an ensemble member in Opera Wilmington’s production of Bizet’s
Carmen. Madison plans on pursuing a Masters in Performance and Vocal Pedagogy
after graduating from UNCW in 2019.
Presented in partial fulfilment for the Bachelor of Arts in
Music.
Madison Murphy is a voice student of Professor Nancy King.
Carey Avant is a senior at UNCW pursuing a B.M. in Music
Education. Before coming to UNCW, Carey was a student at Cape Fear Community
College. She served as an accompanist for Cape Fear Community College,
accompanied choir and voice students for choir concerts and student recitals,
as well as the student opening of the Cape Fear Community College Wilson
Center. She also provided music for Phi Theta Kappa ceremonies, an honors
society of which she is a member. Carey also received two student awards for
academic achievement, the Ogden Baptist Church Music Scholarship, and the Jack
and Judy McGarry Scholarship. Carey has been employed as a music intern at
Wrightsville Beach Methodist Church since 2015, where her responsibilities
include leading the youth group praise band and serving as Children’s Choir
assistant, Bell Choir member, and fill-in sound technician. At UNCW, Carey has
performed as an accompanist at choral Music Performance Adjudication festivals,
played solo pieces in a program at Cameron Art Museum, performed in UNCW’s
annual Piano Day, and participated in master classes with Evgeny Rivken and
Mauricy Martin. She also performed as a soloist and harpsichord accompanist in
a short baroque program prior to Chamber Music Wilmington’s presentation of
ACRONYM, After graduating from UNCW in December 2018, she plans to continue
working as a church musician and begin teaching elementary school music.

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC CONCERT GUIDELINES FOR UNCW STUDENTS
Arrive on time
• Arrive at the concert venue at least 10 minutes before the posted concert time. If you need to get a ticket at the box office, have your UNCW student ID ready and arrive at least another 5 sooner.
Concert attendance and program stamping
Programs for students registered in Department of Music classes are stamped by the ushers at the end of the performance.
• If you leave before the concert ends, your program will not be stamped.
• If ushers should run out of programs, ask them to stamp your ticket stub at the end of the concert. Let your teacher know what happened.
Use of electronic devices during performances
• use of computers, tablets, phones is not allowed during performances. Anyone using an electronic device will be asked to put it away. Noncompliance may result in being asked to leave the event.
