Bob Russell returns to UNCW to perform with Jazz Ensemble I, UNCW's
largest jazz group, directed by Jerald Shynett. Russell – an institution in
southeastern North Carolina and a master of many styles – is well known
for his versiltity, range and depth on jazz guitar. The evening features
compositions by Russell and some of his favorite jazz tunes.
Russell began playing the guitar in 1965. At first inspired
by the British Invasion sounds heard on the radio, he later discovered the music
of Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck. A Django Reinhardt LP purchased as a teenager
set him on a journey into jazz that has lasted well over forty years. Russell
has three albums currently in release: Home
Game (2010), a jazz quintet date recorded live with UNCW faculty member
Mike Waddell; Bob Russell's Ego Trip
(2010), a collection of Russell's original rock songs; and Watch This! (2002), featuring his original jazz compositions. His
playing has been featured in Just Jazz
Guitar and Saxophone Journal
magazines, as well as on the soundtracks of major motion pictures Consenting Adults and Domestic Disturbance. His original music
for the soundtrack of the Emmy Award-winning documentary Hard Road to Glory won a Freedoms Foundation award in 1986. Russell
served as a member of the UNCW jazz faculty from 1995 until his retirement in
2015. He busy as a freelance musician doing live and recording work, playing
guitar, pedal steel, lap steel and keyboards with Travis Shallow, Mike Blair
and the Stonewalls and other local artists and groups.
