Department of Music faculty member Mike Waddell (clarinet and bass clarinet) and Constance Waddell (soprano) present an evening of classical and jazz music with Elizabeth Loparits and Andy Paolantonio (piano) and Michael Waddell (bass).

Michael Waddell has performed on clarinet in a host of great venues, including the Hollywood Bowl and Kennedy Center – whether it’s Mozart, Monk, Brahms or Bird. A twice recipient of the North Carolina Jazz Composer’s Fellowship, he produced the CDs Not From Concentrate, Defining Moments, and most recently Home Game (with UNCW faculty member Bob Russell). In addition to concerts with Russell, Waddell has performed and/or recorded with the Dukes of Dixieland, Ed Paolantonio, Scott Sawyer, the N.C. Jazz Festival, the American Dance Festival, the Wilmington and Fairbanks Symphony Orchestras, as well as the UNCW Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensembles. Most recently, he performed Claude Debussy’s Premiere Rhapsody with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. He performed solo clarinet on Déjà Vu, coached clarinetists for the feature film Bolden and played on a soundtrack of One Tree Hill. Waddell received his Master of Music in clarinet from the University of Michigan and his Bachelor in Music Education from East Carolina University. His teachers include David Shifrin, Robert Listokin, Herbert Carter on clarinet, Don Sinta on saxophone, and Buddy DeFranco on jazz clarinet. Waddell is a member of the faculty at UNCW.

Constance Waddell earned her Master of Music from Eastman School of Music and Bachelor of Music from Appalachian State University. She has studied under Katherine Ciesinski, Benton Hess, Julia Pedigo, and Nancy King. She has performed most recently with Thalian Association, UNC-WOOP!, Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, Mercury Opera, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman Opera Theater, Opera New Jersey, and Champlain Valley Oratorio Society. During her time at Eastman, she received an assistantship in teaching private voice lessons. In 2009, Waddell placed first in the senior division of North Carolina NATS, advancing to the final regional level and again receiving first place as well as the award for Best College Female in the competition.

Elizabeth Loparits began her professional career in her native Hungary, where she won top prizes at the 1995 National Bartók Piano Competition and the 1996 Kodály-Bartók Chamber Music Competition. As a soloist and collaborative artist, she has appeared on recitals in Hungary, Austria, Costa Rica, and throughout the United States. Loparits is an active teacher, clinician, and adjudicator in North Carolina and nationally. She holds an education degree and a chamber music artist diploma from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Pécs, Hungary, a Master of Music from Illinois State University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts from UNC Greensboro. She serves as faculty and staff accompanist at UNCW.

Michael D’Angelo joined the UNCW faculty in 2012 as a lecturer in jazz studies and drum set instructor. He was a member of the University of North Texas One O’Clock Lab Band from 2008-09 and received a Grammy nomination for the band’s annual recording, Lab 2009, for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. In 2011, he was invited to participate in the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Music Institute for Jazz, an invitation-only workshop for rising jazz performers and composers with mentorship from David Baker, Rufus Reid, Nathan Davis, and Curtis Fuller. He performs in all aspects of percussion and musical idioms, including symphony orchestra, large wind ensemble, percussion ensembles, chamber ensembles, musicals, large and chamber jazz ensembles, commissions, solo concerts, and clinics.

He performs on tenor saxophone and clarinet with the John Brown Big Band and the N.C. Jazz Repertory Orchestra His major teachers are Christopher Grimes on clarinet and Ira Wiggins on saxophone.
